The Fall of Charleston

February 1865

Confederate forces evacuated Charleston overnight on 17–18 February 1865, firing stores and shipping as they went. The first Federal troops into the city were men of the 21st United States Colored Infantry, many of them recruited from the South Carolina lowcountry.
